Truth Thursday 09: To Answer Your Question

baglady To answer your question… yes, there is such a guy or girl that you have been praying and waiting for. Maybe you’ve stopped believing this. I know I did. I didn’t even notice that I’ve stopped believing that there is still a guy who’s God fearing and cool, scruffy but smells good:) I sort of just settled for praying for someone who’s decent, when I remember to pray. But the Lord has not forgotten the desires of my heart, though I have. And recently He reminded me that if He knew something as frivolous as I wanted a Longchamp bag (though I wouldn’t admit it even to myself) and gave me one for my birthday, He surely knows what makes my heart beat faster. He just has one condition but now am sure that He means it when He said: ‘Delight yourself in me and I will give you the desires of your heart.’ To answer your question… yes, God knows the desires of our hearts.

Truth Thursday 04: In time I will be

Twain[1]When I teach I feel God’s pleasure

When I was little I wanted to be a vendor in the market. I had all the palayok (clay pot ) toys and would pretend to sell these to my family and friends. In high school I had the idea that I would be a lawyer so in college I studied Political Science. However, I didn’t pass the LAE (law aptitude exam) so I took it as clear sign that law was not for me after all. God closed that window and opened a window for me to study abroad. After my study abroad I went back to my university to teach. It was not my first choice for my first job. I applied for work for an NGO specializing on disaster risk reduction but I didn’t get the position so I took the offer to teach. After teaching full time, then later on part time, for several years, I still wasn’t sure if teaching was what I was called to do. I did other part time work like conference organizing. I also considered going full time in church ministry. This didn’t work out which confirmed that God has not called me full time. I kept declining offers of companies which makes business cards because I wasn’t sure yet what God called me to do. But the Lord is gracious, leading me back, time and again to teaching, after I wandered to other jobs. I didn’t immediately recognized that this was what God called to do. But it makes sense now with the strengths and weaknesses He gave me. Plus I come from a family of teachers on both my father and mother side, I’m wondering now how come it was not my first choice for a job. But now I can say this is what I was meant to do. Just like Eric Liddell in the movie Chariots of Fire who said ‘when I run, I feel God’s pleasure,’ I can say when I teach I feel God’s pleasure.

Work is more than something to earn a living, it is in fact sacred and a calling. Contrary to the idea that we can be anything we want to be, I believe God made us for a specific purpose -our calling. And until we respond to that call we feel that there must be something more. When we respond to our calling Max Lucado likens it to living in your sweet spot. This is a sports term which means in tennis, baseball or cricket, the ball being struck, usually absorbs the maximum amount of the available kinetic energy and rebounds away from the racquet, bat, club, with a greater velocity than if struck at any other point on the racquet, bat or club. Max Lucado explains that when God created each one of us He ‘wired’ each person a certain way i.e. unique with certain strengths and weaknesses. The way God wired us gives us the clue to our calling. When we are employing our strengths in our work and applying the principles of work as a calling, we live in our sweet spot or as Woodrow Wilson said you ‘enable the world ro live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You enrich the world.’

Truth Thursdays 03: This Journey

Songs that make me brave.

I’m a person who wakes up with a song in my mind. Some wake up with a thought or a dream, I wake up with a song. It’s ironic because I’m not musically inclined which is an understatement. I mean back in the days in my youth group, I would be allowed to join for the caroling but was specifically told just to lip-sync saying the word watermelon over and over. That’s just how it is. But I would wake up most of the time with a song and it could be any song from an OPM (original Pilipino music) like ‘Sa Kanya’ to something as obscure as ‘Lover’s Moon’ (yes this is a song in the 80s:). I would like to think this my very own secret language with God. He would give me just the song I would need for the day or coming days or to put to music what I’m feeling.

Today I woke up with the Switchfoot song ‘Economy of Mercy’ fitting for this prompt on truth thursdays on songs that make you brave, which started with a quote from Jon Foreman (frontman of Switchfoot). Actually this song was already in my mind last night. It sort of put into music what I’ve been going through the past days. I’ve been discouraged that my job hunting is not turning out well and I turned in a half baked proposal. My savings is running low and I know I have to submit a good proposal to be accepted in the study program I’m applying for. Yesterday however, my half-baked proposal was accepted with revisions and I was reminded that I was going to get a tax refund from my last job.

This song Economy of Mercy was a reminder from the Lord to me that He runs on a different program than the world runs so to speak. In Him it is possible to have abundance in times of crisis and second, third and infinite chances. He blesses us time and time again not because we deserve it but because He is a gracious God. In fact, we can only be saved by faith in His son Jesus, through grace, not by our own doing.

‘In the economy of mercy
I’m a poor and begging man
‘In the economy of grace
Is where my song begins
In the colors of Your goodness
In the scars that mark your skin
‘In the economy of grace
Is where my song begins

God’s love is a thousand winters melting. Today I leave behind winter, literally and figuratively speaking.

Truth Thursday 01: I Am Here

Truth Thursday 01: I Am Here.

Truth Thursday 01: I Am Here

I am hopeful. Things are not looking up (yet) but I know regardless of what I’m hoping for may happen or not, who I am hoping in is faithful. In I came across the explanation of God’s faithfulness or hesed. According to the voyages ” The Hebrew word hesed cannot be translated with one English word. This is a covenant term, wrapping up in itself all the positive attributes of God: love, covenant faithfulness, mercy, grace, kindness, loyalty–in short, acts of devotion and loving-kindness that go beyond the requirements of duty.”

I am covered by God’s hesed.
